Captyne System Requirements: After Effects Versions, OS, GPU and Disk Space

Updated 1 min read

Captyne works on most editing machines that already run After Effects. Only offline transcription has extra hardware needs, and cloud transcription works without them.

Requirements for offline transcription

Offline / Local transcription runs the Whisper Large v3.1 model on your own computer. It's free, private and works without internet once the model (about 3 GB) is downloaded.

  • Windows: needs an NVIDIA GPU from the RTX 20-series or GTX 16-series or newer (CUDA compute capability 7.5+), with a recent NVIDIA driver. Older cards such as the GTX 10-series can't run it. Details are in Offline transcription GPU requirements.
  • Mac: supported on Apple Silicon.

No compatible GPU? Use one of the cloud providers instead: the Managed API included with paid plans, or your own OpenAI, Groq or AssemblyAI key. They give the same caption results. See Offline vs cloud transcription.

Third-party plugins in presets

Most presets use only effects that come with After Effects. Some marketplace presets also use third-party plugins such as Deep Glow or Optical Flares. Captyne tells you before you use one if a required plugin isn't installed.
