How to Install Captyne on Windows (SmartScreen and Chrome Warnings Explained)

Updated 1 min read

Captyne installs as a panel inside Adobe After Effects. The Windows installer sets up the panel, the offline transcription runtime and everything else it needs, so you don't have to copy any files by hand.

Before you start: close After Effects. The installer can't update a panel that's currently open.

1. Download the installer

Go to the installation page and click Download Captyne for Windows. You'll get a file called Captyne_Setup.exe.

Chrome may warn that the file "may be harmful". That warning appears for any new installer that hasn't been code-signed yet. It doesn't mean anything was found in the file.

  1. Press Ctrl + J to open Chrome's downloads page.
  2. Find Captyne_Setup.exe and click Keep anyway.

2. Run the installer

Double-click Captyne_Setup.exe. Windows SmartScreen may show a blue "Windows protected your PC" window.

  1. Click the small More info link. Don't click "Don't run".
  2. Click Run anyway.
  3. Follow the steps in the installer. It installs the Captyne panel and the transcription runtime (in C:\Captyne by default).

3. Open Captyne in After Effects

  1. Start After Effects. If it was open during the install, restart it.
  2. Go to Window → Extensions → Captyne.
  3. Sign in on the Account tab with your captyne.com account.

You can dock the panel anywhere in your workspace, just like any other After Effects panel.

Optional: download the offline model

If you want Offline / Local transcription, which is free, private and needs no internet, Captyne also needs the Whisper Large v3.1 model (about 3 GB). The panel prompts you to download it the first time you choose Offline. You can skip this if you only use cloud transcription. See Offline vs cloud transcription to decide.
