Editing Captions Before You Generate: Merge, Split, Delete and Rename Words

Updated 2 min read

After transcription, Captyne opens the Preview tab. Every phrase is shown as a group of word chips. Edit here before you click Generate Captions: it's much faster than fixing text layers afterwards.

Fix a misspelled word

Double-click a word chip, type the correct text and press Enter. The word keeps its timing.

Delete a word

Hover over a word chip and click the small red × that appears next to it. The deleted word's time goes to the word before it (or after it, if it was the first word), so the captions stay in sync. Use it to remove filler words like "um" or repeated words. (Captyne 1.5.2 and later.)

Merge two words into one

Hover over the gap between two words in the same group and click the ⛓ chain icon. The two words become one chip and animate as a single word. Click × on a merged chip to split it again.

Don't see the ⛓ icon? Word merging is hidden while Active Highlight is on and in the Single Word reveal mode. Turn those off, merge, then turn them back on.

Example: turning "single payer" into "single-payer"

Merging joins the words with a space. To get a hyphenated word instead:

  1. Hover over payer and click the red × to delete it.
  2. Double-click single, type single-payer and press Enter.

The new word spans the time of both original words.

Split or join caption groups

  • Split a group: hover between groups and click ✂, then click the word gap where the new group should start. Press Esc to cancel.
  • Join two groups: hover between them and click ⛓ Merge.

Move a word to another line

Use the ↑ / ↓ chevrons on a word chip to move it to the line above or below in its group.

Auto vs Manual grouping

The Word Grouping toggle switches between Auto, which follows your Words / Phrase and pause settings, and Manual. Once you split, merge or delete, Captyne switches to Manual so your edits aren't regrouped.

Change the emphasis style of a word

Click a word chip to cycle its style role (Normal, Emphasis, Style 3). See Highlighting key words in your captions.

All these edits are saved with your project automatically. See Your captions are saved with your project.
