Word-by-Word Captions: Reveal Modes Explained
The Reveal Mode on the Setup tab controls how the words of each phrase appear on screen. The words and timing stay the same, but the feel of the captions changes a lot.
The four reveal modes
| Reveal Mode | What you see | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Group All At Once | The whole phrase appears together, then is replaced by the next | Clean subtitles, tutorials, interviews |
| Cumulative Words | Words pop on one by one as they're spoken, building up the phrase | TikTok, Reels and Shorts-style captions |
| Cumulative Lines | Each line of a phrase appears as a unit | Two-line captions that still feel animated |
| Single Word | One word at a time, each replacing the last | High-energy edits, music videos, hooks |
Controls that work with reveal modes
- Words / Phrase: the maximum number of words in a phrase. Short phrases (2–4 words) suit social content.
- Words / Line: when a phrase wraps to a second line.
- Pause threshold: a pause in speech longer than this always starts a new phrase, so captions follow the speaker's rhythm.
Changing your mind
Changed the reveal mode or grouping after transcribing? Click Refresh Preview on the Preview tab. Then click Generate Captions again, and the old caption layers are replaced. You don't need to transcribe again.
In Single Word mode each word is its own phrase, so the ⛓ word-merge button is hidden. To join two words, switch to another mode, merge them, then switch back.
