How to Install Captyne on Mac (Apple Silicon)

Updated 1 min read

Captyne for Mac runs on Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) with macOS 12 or later. Intel Macs aren't supported.

Before you start: quit After Effects completely (Cmd + Q).

1. Download the installer

Download Captyne_Mac.pkg from the installation page and double-click it.

macOS will probably block it with a message saying it "Not Opened", because Apple couldn't verify the developer. This happens with any installer that isn't notarized yet. Click Done, not "Move to Bin".

2. Allow the installer

  1. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  2. Scroll down to the Security section. You'll see a note that Captyne_Mac.pkg was blocked.
  3. Click Open Anyway, then confirm with Open Anyway again. macOS may ask for your password.

3. Finish the installation

The macOS installer opens. Click Continue through the steps and enter your password when asked. Captyne installs the panel for your user account and turns on the setting After Effects needs to load it.

4. Open Captyne in After Effects

  1. Start After Effects.
  2. Go to Window → Extensions → Captyne.
  3. Sign in on the Account tab.

Where Captyne lives on a Mac

  • Panel and presets: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions/Captyne/
  • Offline transcription runtime and model: ~/CaptyneRuntime/

To use Offline / Local transcription, you also need the Whisper model (about 3 GB). The installer puts a Download Captyne Model shortcut on your Desktop, and the panel offers the download the first time you choose Offline.
